Introduction of Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
The Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake trek is a relatively new and less crowded trekking route that offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The trek is moderate in difficulty and takes around 12-14 days to complete, depending on your pace and itinerary.
The trek starts from Nayapul, a 1-2 hour drive from Pokhara. From there, you will trek through various villages, forests, and ridges, gradually gaining altitude. The first few days of the trek follow the same route as the popular Ghorepani Poon Hill trek but then diverges towards Khopra Ridge.
On the way to Khopra Ridge, you will pass through several charming villages, including Tadapani, Bayeli, and Chistibung. You can enjoy stunning views of the Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks along the way. You can also visit traditional villages and interact with the friendly locals, who warmly welcome you.
The Khopra Ridge is a beautiful viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From there, you can see the stunning peaks of Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna South (7219m), Nilgiri (7061m), Machhapuchhre (6993m), and Hiunchuli (6441m). You can also witness the beautiful sunrise and sunset views from this viewpoint.
After exploring the Khopra Ridge, the trek continues towards Khayer Lake, a sacred lake for Hindus and Buddhists. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is considered one of Nepal’s holiest lakes. Legend has it that a dip in the lake can cure various diseases and ailments.
On the way to Khayer Lake, you will pass through beautiful forests, streams, and meadows, where you can spot yaks, mountain goats, and other wildlife. The trek to Khayer Lake is challenging, but the stunning views and the serene atmosphere of the lake make it all worthwhile.
The best time to go on this trek is from March to May and September to November when the weather is dry and clear, and the views are spectacular. During the monsoon season (June to August), the trail can be muddy and slippery, and sponges may be on the way.
Accommodation options on the trek range from basic teahouses to comfortable lodges, and there are plenty of opportunities to try local Nepalese cuisine along the way. You can also hire a guide and a porter to help you with your luggage and navigation.
The Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake trek is an excellent alternative to the more popular treks in the Annapurna region, offering stunning views, cultural experiences, and a sense of adventure. This trek will bring unforgettable memories of Nepal’s natural beauty and hospitality.
Overall, the Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake trek is a beautiful but highly underrated trek in Nepal. It is one of the newly opened treks with less difficulty, is cheap, and has plenty of new places to explore around the Annapurna region. This is one of the most minor trek regions and has opened many roads for tourism in Nepal. Many trekkers who have visited the said trekking site have praised the management and beauty of the trekking route. So, let’s get to know the history of the trek.
History of Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
Khopra Danda is a beautiful hill station recently gaining tourists’ attention as a trekking destination. Before becoming a tourist station, the place was trendy for cattle and yak grazing; however, the location and the insane view of mountains from the Danda motivated the government to make it a tourist site. The place was relatively barren before, but nowadays, several lodges, hotels, and teahouses provide services to the trekkers.
Along with Khopra Danda, you will come across Khayer Lake if you pass through the same road, and it is one of the most beautiful locations in Nepal. The Khayer Lake is still treated as a religious site in Nepal as many local people believe the lake’s water is medicine for people suffering from skin disease. After the popularity of Khopra Danda started, the trekkers began trekking its surroundings when they found Khayer Lake, which also became an equally attractive trekking destination.
Major Attractions of Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
Despite being one of the underrated treks of Nepal, Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake trek are among the easy to moderate difficulty treks and fall under one of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking destinations.
During this trek, the trend kickers will take full advantage of the beautiful journey from Pokhara to Ghandruk and witness and explore some of the best attractions that the trek has to offer. Let’s look at some major attractions you can explore during this trek.
Ghandruk Village
Ghandruk village is a small but beautiful village that lies 32km northwest of Pokhara and is a VDC of the Kaski District. It is commonplace for trekkers to go on either the Annapurna Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The village is beautiful, and the people are welcoming but less influenced by Western culture than in other major towns or cities in the Annapurna region. The main attraction of Ghandruk village lies on one of the highest elevations in the world. You can see beautiful mountains from the village, like Hiunchuli, Macchapuchre, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, etc.
Mulde View Point
Mulde View Point, which lies east of Ghorepani, is another unique but underrated trekking destination in Nepal. It is one of the most comfortable treks for tourists as it has lots of accommodation services, straight, easy trekking trails, and various ethnic people with different cultures who are highly welcoming. One of the critical attractions of Mulde View Point is its elevation, where you can see many mountains and a surrounding area that consists of pine trees, fast-flowing rivers, and rhododendron forests.
Khayer Lake
Khayer Lake is the famous sacred lake located on the southern side of the base of the Annapurna Himal. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in Nepal, with an equally beautiful vista surrounding it. The lake is at an elevation of 4660m, from which all the mountain ranges of the Annapurna region can be seen. The lake’s backdrop and the beautiful mountains vista make the place perfect for clicking photos and saving memories for a lifetime.
Best Time for Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek
It is always essential to book your trek according to the time or season of the destination you are visiting. The climate, temperature, chance of rainfall, or natural disasters like floods will hamper your trek more than you can imagine, and they are all influenced by season, so let’s look at the best time for this particular Trek.
Autumn Season (September to December)
Generally, experts believe the best trekking season in Nepal is the Spring season, which falls from March to May; however, for Khopra Dada and Khayer Lake, mid to late autumn is the best season for trekking. Generally, this time, the weather is chilly, which makes the days and nights neither too hot nor too cold, and you can enjoy a whole trekking experience wearing comfortable clothes and even swim in the pools of the resorts or rivers and lakes if allowed.
Spring Season
Another good season for the trek is the spring, which is the dry summer season. Generally, the weather is clear, but there are sudden chances of rainfall and fast winds. The days are hotter, but as the afternoon passes, it becomes more incredible to trek.
Winter Season
The following season for a trek in Khapra Danda and Khayer Lake is winter when the place becomes very cold at an elevation of over 4600m. The chances of the Khopra Dada becoming close for trekking can be high this season, so you must research before planning your time. This season is still a decent trek time if you are OK with cold days and even colder nights.
Monsoon Season
Monsoon Season is the worst season to go on a Khopra Dada and Khayer Lake. Even since the pre-monsoon season begins, the weather becomes dry and humid, which is not fun for trekking for several days. Constant regular rainfall for even 5-6 days will ruin the fun. There are chances of insects and leeches, and the risk of floods and landslides is real. Clouds, humidity, and steam block the views, so the monsoon season is the worst season for trekking, which you should avoid duly.

Trip Information
Best Time
The optimum time for the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Both offer the optimum climate, clear skies, and extensive mountain vistas. Spring offers a rhododendron flower-surrounded trail with colored flowers. Autumn offers clear blue skies with fresh air and great Himalayan views.
You can also trek during winter (December to February) if you prefer snow and deserted trails, but it gets extremely cold, and a few of the lodges remain shut. Monsoon (June to August) is the worst time because it rains heavily, the trails get slippery, and visibility is poor, but the forests are full of greenery.
Although it is possible throughout the year, the off-season months are a bit tough with weather conditions, but if you are ready and an adventure lover, Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake are always welcoming.
Elevation and Distance
The Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek takes you to so many wonderful locations, each one of them having some kind of beauty.
The highlight of the trek is Khayer Lake at an altitude of 4,660 meters (15,289 feet). Reaching this sacred lake is reaching heaven—it’s peaceful, peaceful, and surrounded by enormous white peaks.
The lowest point is at Tatopani, 1,190 meters (3,904 feet), where you soak your tired legs in natural hot springs.
Along the route, you’ll be walking through villages, forests, ridges, and mountain paths. You’ll be walking a total of about 100 to 110 kilometers (62 to 68 miles) in six days.
They are pretty straightforward, some shorter and more strenuous, but all of them will be worth it as you fill your lungs with that mountain air and soak in that landscape. From hot springs to alpine lakes high up, this hike gives you whatever adventure, culture, and feeling of deep connection with nature you are looking for.
Difficulty and Altitude Sickness
The Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek is a moderately challenging trek that can be done by trekkers having good physical endurance and trekking experience. The trek is not very technically challenging but consists of long walking hours, steep climbing, and physically demanding high altitude.
The most challenging day is the hike to Khayer Lake at 4,660 meters elevation, a long up and down in one day.
Since the trek is at high elevation, altitude sickness cannot be excluded, especially above 3,000 meters. The symptoms are headache, dizziness, and breathlessness. To avoid it, we trek slowly, have rest days like at Khopra Ridge, and drink plenty of water.
Slow pace and acclimatization are acceptable to all. Always listen to your body and tell your guide if you are not well. Carefully, the trek is safe and very rewarding.
Maximum and minimum walk per day
The most difficult trekking day is on Day 09 of the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek, when we trek to Khayer Lake and back to Khopra Danda. It is around 9 to 11 hours in total as we ascend to the lake and back on the same day. It is tough, but well worth the scenery and peaceful ambiance of the sacred lake.
The shortest walking day is Day 07, in which we hike from Upper Chistibung to Khopra Ridge, and it takes about 4 to 5 hours. It is a relatively easier day and provides us with more time to enjoy the magnificent views and acclimatize at the ridge.
We typically walk 5 to 6 hours daily on the trek. There are more challenging days and easier days, but there is always terrific scenery and something different to view each day. At the appropriate pace and with the proper attitude, it’s a trek to be enjoyed, not rushed.
Accommodation
Accommodation during the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek will be for 3 nights at a tourist-standard hotel in Kathmandu, which is well-furnished, clean, and comfortable with all the basic facilities. Accommodation while trekking is at basic teahouses on a twin-sharing basis. The rooms are simple but neat, having soft beds, pillows, and warm blankets to keep you warm during the night.
There are western toilets in some villages, and there are community toilets of eastern style in others. There are toilet facilities in the room along with private rooms, which can be booked extra for privacy.
The rooms have a beautiful view of the mountains, and reclining in the window with a cup of tea is absolute magic. Although the amenities are basic, the hospitality of the local people and the peaceful ambiance will make you return home each evening on the tour.
Food and Drink
Throughout the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek, your dinner, lunch, and breakfast are also included in the package. The food is served in local teahouses and freshly cooked. Breakfast consists of items like toast, eggs, pancakes, porridge, Tibetan bread, tea or coffee, etc. The lunch and dinner are usually warm and sufficient food like dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, and on some days momos (dumplings).
You can also buy extra snacks and drinks like chocolate bars, biscuits, chips, soft drinks, and bottled water at small shops or tea houses along the trail, but you’ll have to pay for those yourself. Hot drinks like lemon tea, ginger tea, and milk tea are also available, and they’re perfect for keeping warm.
While options are convenient, food is comforting, and having meals with views of mountains all around makes each meal so special.
Alternative Trails
If you would like to do the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek differently, there are some wonderful alternative trails to take. These trails offer their own set of experiences, either if you have less time or merely looking for a lesser-visited route.
Among the most popular options is the Mohare Danda–Khopra Danda trek, or the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Community Trek. It is less touristy and more remote, with peaceful passage through beautiful rhododendron forests and traditional Magar and Gurung villages. It offers breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri summits and helps the local people with community-run lodges.
For the time-pressed trekker, a shorter version of the trek to Khopra Danda is also available. This shorter version of the trek, starting and finishing in Pokhara, is 5 to 7 days in duration and focuses on the highlights like Khopra Ridge and views but skims over the longer trek to Khayer Lake.
Or, better yet, combine the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek with the Khopra Danda trek. You experience the mythical Poon Hill sunrise and then diverge from the trek to the serenity of Khopra Ridge, combining familiar sights with tranquility.
They all offer different glimpses of the Annapurna region, each appealing to different tastes and schedules.
Can a beginner undertake this trek?
Yes, a beginner can do the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek if they are well-prepared and have the right mindset. The trek is of moderate grade, i.e., you don’t require technical climbing but need to be reasonably fit and ready for some up as well as long days of trekking. The highest is Khayer Lake at 4,660 meters, which is weary-making because of the high altitude, so slow and steady is the approach.
What makes this trek beginner-friendly is the well-paced itinerary, rest days for acclimatization, and the support of experienced guides. The trails are well-marked, and you’ll be staying in cozy teahouses with warm meals and simple comforts. With some basic training, like walking or hiking, before the trip, even first-time trekkers can enjoy this beautiful journey.
It is a good choice for novice trekkers to enjoy a genuine Himalayan adventure, stunning landscapes, and peaceful nature with not much technical challenge.
Preparation and Fitness
For Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek pleasure, an extremely high overall fitness level and conditioning would be best suited. You do not have to be an athlete, but pre-activation before traveling to attempt the trek will ensure your travel is enjoyable. Walk regularly, up short slopes, or walk upstairs for around three weeks before your travel. It’s leg conditions to get ready for long days of walking and climbing the mountains.
You’ll be trekking for about 5 to 7 hours a day, sometimes more, so stamina is key. Cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, or swimming can also boost your endurance. Mental preparation is just as important—being positive, patient, and ready for mountain weather and basic conditions will go a long way.
Walk light, drink in, and walk behind your guide. With exertion and goodwill, for most fit individuals, this is a straightforward but deserving experience.
harging gadgets, Internet, and communication
While staying connected and having charged gadgets during the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek is not out of reach but requires a certain amount of prethought.
Most of the teahouses along the trail are electric and powered by solar electricity. You can recharge your phones, cameras, and power banks at a cost, from NPR 200 to NPR 500 per item. Charging may be scarce at higher elevations, so it’s best to have a power bank or spare batteries.
Wi-Fi is available in most teahouses, especially at lower elevations. The connection can be slow and intermittent, however, and especially as you go higher up. Access usually costs an extra NPR 200 to 300 per day.
In lower regions, cellular networks like NTC and Ncell provide acceptable coverage. When trekking further up, the signal fades or can even disappear. A local SIM card bought in Kathmandu or Pokhara is recommended if you want to use mobile data.
Bring necessary adapters (Type C or D), have enough local currency to pay for extra services, and maybe inform known individuals beforehand of any probable deficiencies in communication on the hike.
Permit
For the trek to Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake, you will only need two simple permits—a TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). It’s part of the process to protect you and keep the beautiful trails and villages that you will pass through safe.
The TIMS card is simple to find trekkers in case they require medical or other emergency care, and the ACAP also serves conservation and local communities in the Annapurna region. But the good news is, you don’t have to arrange this yourself. All of this is arranged for you. We just need a few passport photos and a photocopy of your passport, and you’re off.
It’s one less thing to worry about, so you can spend more time getting excited about the mountains, the culture, and adventure awaiting you.

We employ comfortable, elite vehicles appropriate for the size of the group—small vehicles to tourist vans or even minibuses—so that you may travel comfortably and securely. All the transfers are problem-free, seamless, and comprehensively arranged for you.
Insurance
Yes, trekking insurance for the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek is required, and we highly recommend it for your own peace of mind and for your safety too. As much as we might wish everything was fine, trekkings do take place at high altitude and in isolated terrain, so we always think that it’s always best to prepare.
Your insurance should specifically include high-altitude trekking, up to 4,660 meters, the highest point of this trek at Khayer Lake. It should also include emergency medical expenses, helicopter evacuation for severe illness or injury, trip cancellations or interruptions, and loss or damage of luggage.
Take the time to read the fine print and make your provider aware that you are going on a high-altitude trekking holiday to Nepal. You can then wander free where you please, and if anything is to go wrong, have the knowledge that you have cover. This is not box-ticking but a reasonable part of your travel arrangements.
What to Expect on this Trek
On the Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek, you can expect a peaceful, scenic, and abounding in friendly locals’ experience. The trek isolates you from the populated trails and takes you to isolated villages, where the mountains seem nearer and locals are more hospitable. You will trek on rich rhododendron forests, large alpine meadows, and peaceful ridges with great views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
You’ll sleep in cozy teahouses, eat warm, homemade meals, and wake up to sunrise over snow-capped peaks. Expect to meet kind-hearted locals, curious yaks, and fellow trekkers from around the world. The walk to Khayer Lake is the most challenging day—but also the most magical, with a sacred lake surrounded by silent, icy peaks.
While the trek is not technical, it will challenge your stamina and reward your soul. Expect simplicity, beauty, and a sense of peace you’ll carry home long after the trek ends.
