Introduction of Chandragiri Day Hike
The Chandragiri Day Hike is a convenient way to spend a full day in the hills without traveling far from Kathmandu. Chandragiri Hill is situated in the southwest part of Kathmandu Valley, offering a break from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and a forested walking path, open hill and valley views. The hike is good for those who wish to enjoy the outdoors and a moderate challenge but are not ready for the longer multi-day hikes.
Following a brief drive towards the Thankot area, the walk starts. The trail is slightly uphill from the trailhead but then starts to ascend rapidly through the forest. Much of the path is bordered by trees, with a few gaps providing vistas towards the valley. This walk is physically active but there are no technical climbing sections; it takes place on a continuously uphill path. The route is fairly fast-paced and broken up with rest stops, making it easy for a fairly fit person to climb.
The primary goal is to reach Chandragiri Hill, which is about 2,551 m (8,369 ft) high. The hilltop offers vistas that are open on one side and when the weather is clear, it will afford a view over the Kathmandu Valley and towards several ranges of the Himalayas. The views are spread towards the Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Annapurna and Gaurishankar region depending on the atmospheric condition. Views of distant mountains are not assured due to the possibility of haze and/or clouds varying in appearance throughout the day.
The Chandragiri Hiking Route is also a cultural one. Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple is located at the peak, which is also one of the prominent Hindu pilgrimage centers. After ascending to the temple and viewpoint area, people have time to stay in this area. The hike is set in a forest, adding mountain views and a religious site, making it more interesting than a simple hill walk.
There is an interesting element of this trip that is the mode of transportation. For travelers wishing for a longer hike, there is also a trail down through the forest. Alternatively, for those who don’t want the toughest descent, there is a Chandragiri Cable Car from the top of the hill to the bottom station, where you then head right down to Kathmandu. The flexibility allows for adapting the physical activity of the day based on the energy level, the weather and the individual’s preference.
On the whole, the most favorable hike is likely to be during the drier season, when the trail is easier to walk over and mountain visibility will be increased. Spring and autumn are ideal times and winter can be a good time too if you dress appropriately. The forest trail may become muddy and slippery during the monsoon and may have low visibility.
The Chandragiri Day Hike offers a handful of experiences in one day for travelers wanting to escape Kathmandu. You can walk through the forest, climb up to a high hilltop, visit a temple, admire the view of the valley and then go on either a walk or the cable car down. The day runs smoothly and is organized with the help of Adventure Walkway’s trip support.
Why Chandragiri Day Hike Is Special
What is special about the Chandragiri Day Hike is that you can experience a forest hike, a top-of-the-world view and a cultural site in just a single day from Kathmandu. The trail quickly exits the city and heads through a serene forest to provide a scenic break from the noise and fast pace of urban life without the long hike.
Chandragiri Hill (2,551 m / 8,369 ft) offers panoramic vistas over Kathmandu Valley and, in clear skies, over several Himalayan ranges. Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple is also located on the summit, which enhances the cultural aspect of the walk.
Another good option is the descent selection. Hikers can return the way they came, for a longer day of walking through the forest or go back down the cable car if they are looking for a faster and easier trip home. This versatility allows the trek to be adapted to various levels of fitness and provides hikers with greater flexibility in their day planning.

Itinerary of Chandragiri Day Hike
Morning
Following breakfast, we will drive to Satungal and Thankot, from where we have to start the hike to Chandragiri Hill. This is a short drive that leads you away from the hustle and bustle of the city and towards the southwest of the Kathmandu Valley.
At the trailhead, we will start hiking through the woods. The path ascends steadily, rising a few times at the point where we reach higher elevations. The trail is for the most part shaded and quiet from the traffic below, as it runs through forest. There are occasional gaps in the forest for a view back towards the Kathmandu Valley.
It takes about 4 hours to walk up to the summit, depending on one’s pace and stopping frequency. We will take breaks along the way to drink water and enjoy the surroundings before continuing towards the hilltop.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, we will arrive at Chandragiri Hill around 2,551m (8,369ft). The summit area offers clear vistas of the Kathmandu Valley as well as, in clear conditions, several Himalayan ranges beyond. The mountains that can be seen are those in Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Annapurna and Gaurishankar. Under very clear conditions, very distant peaks, such as Everest, can be seen as well.
There will be time to rest, to explore the area of the summit and to visit Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple. Once we have enjoyed the hilltop, we can head down according to our preferred itinerary. If someone wishes to continue on foot, the hiker could walk down through the woods, while those who do not want to walk so far can use the Chandragiri Cable Car and descend to the lower station.
The hiking descent will take extra time and will include some steeper and irregular terrain. The cable car will be a faster and easier way back to the lower station. So, it may depend on the preference of the group, the weather and their energy.
Evening
On completion of the descent, we will then take a road back to Kathmandu. Once we hike down, the vehicle will be waiting for us at the agreed road access point. We will go back down the cable car to the lower station and then head back by car.
We should reach Kathmandu again in the afternoon or early evening, depending upon the walking speed and the descent we make. Return to the hotel for the end of the day, after a Chandragiri forest hike.
Activity: Drive and hiking, with optional cable car descent, 6 to 8 hours
Max. Altitude: 2551m./8,369ft. (Chandragiri)
Meal: Breakfast
Trip Information
How Difficult Is the Chandragiri Day Hike?
The Chandragiri Day Hike should be fairly easy for anyone of a reasonable fitness level, except for the steep ascent, which shouldn’t be taken lightly. The path rises steadily in the woods; there are some steep sections where the pace needs to be steady. Technical climbing and difficult mountain terrain are not part of the walk.
What is really difficult is the continual climb, not the trail itself. For the first-time hiker, it is possible to walk it at a leisurely pace, taking breaks and drinking extra water. It is a good idea to wear comfortable hiking shoes, especially on rough terrain.
The elevation is easily visible at 2551m (8369 ft) but only one day is required to hike to the summit. As a variation of the cable car, if the descent is tiring, travelers can opt not to walk the whole distance back up.
Chandragiri Hiking Route and Trail Conditions
The Chandragiri Hiking Route leaves from Thankot in the southwest of Kathmandu Valley and heads upwards through the forest. The footpath descends slightly away from the road as it climbs, offering a more peaceful walking experience.
Much of the walk is through woodland and is uphill the whole way. Roots, stones and a bumpy trail may require careful footing and some sections may be steep. Rain can cause many parts of the trail to get muddy or slippery.
It is easy enough for a day hike but can be made easier with an easy walking pace and proper footwear. The trail is usually comfortable to walk during dry weather but extra care must be taken if it is wet weather, especially on the steeper areas.
Chandragiri Hike With or Without the Cable Car
Once at the top, there are 2 practical ways to complete the descent. There are two ways to return to the forest, either by walking back up from the lower station or by using the Chandragiri Cable Car from the hilltop to the lower station.
| Descent option | Walking effort | Approximate time | Best suited for |
| Hike down | Higher | Several additional hours | Travelers wanting a fuller hiking day |
| Cable car | Much lower | About 9 to 13 minutes | Travelers wanting an easier return |
By hiking both ways, you will stay on the trail longer and make the day a more active one. The cable car saves energy and provides more time at the hilltop.
The length of the cable car is approximately 2.5 km between the lower and upper stations. The operator offers one-way and two-way tickets; hence, travellers can choose the ticket that suits their schedule.
Best Time for the Chandragiri Day Hike
Generally, the Chandragiri Day Hike is best done in the dry seasons of autumn and spring. October and November are generally good months for walking and for good mountain visibility during the day. March and April are also good months.
Winter can also be appropriate but the cold can be at the hilltop and, in some cases, there may be some haze or fog in the morning. During the monsoon months, there is a greater amount of rain, which can make forest trails muddy and slippery and may limit mountain views.
| Season | Typical conditions | Hiking suitability |
| Spring | Mild weather and improving visibility | Very good |
| Summer/Monsoon | Rain, cloud and wet trails | Less suitable |
| Autumn | Dry weather and clearer skies | Excellent |
| Winter | Cold with possible haze or fog | Good with warm clothing |
Temperatures around the hill can turn cold and rainy quickly; a light layer of waterproofing can be helpful even when it isn’t raining.
Weather and Mountain Visibility
Weather is an important aspect of the Chandragiri experience. The Hill is over 2,500m (8202ft) high and temperatures can be cooler at the top than in Kathmandu. According to the official information about Chandragiri, the weather is unpredictable and can change, especially in the rainy season.
The best days for seeing the surrounding Himalayan ranges and the Kathmandu Valley are clear and dry days. In cloudy or hazy weather, the mountains might be partially or totally obscured even if the hiking trail is still reasonable.
Rain is more significant because wet conditions can make the forest trail slippery for hikers. For the wetter months, a waterproof jacket will be useful but for cooler days at the summit, a warm outer layer is recommended.
What Can You See From Chandragiri Hill?
A high point on the hill offers panoramic vistas of Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding hills. During fair weather, the horizon line stretches out over multiple mountain ranges and the top of the climb is the major point of interest in the trek. According to the official site, the cable car and the hilltop offer a view towards the valley and the surrounding green hills and the Himalayan range.
Weather and visibility can vary widely and affect the visible mountains. On very clear days, the distant peaks of the Himalayas may be visible towards the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and Gaurishankar regions and possibly further but very distant peaks like Everest may be seen.
Clouds will pass over the valley throughout the day, so if you can stay a while at the top of the hill, it may be worthwhile to view the changing scenes. The temple area, open spaces and the viewpoint offer other possibilities for photographing this area.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The height of Chandragiri Hill is about 2,551 m (8,369 ft). This is significantly cooler than the centre of Kathmandu, so you may feel a bit more physically active when walking uphill.
Most tourists will not need a separate acclimatization plan if they stick to this height. Climbing is more of a physical challenge than being at high altitudes for an extended period of time.
Take your time for breaks, walk at a comfortable pace and drink water frequently. If the person develops unusual symptoms like severe headache, dizziness, nausea or severe difficulty in breathing, they should stop and notify the guide or trip organiser before continuing to climb.
What to Pack for the Hike
The Chandragiri Hiking Route calls for a small daypack. The walk is a prolonged uphill hike, so only essential items that are useful should be brought along.
- Tight shoes that have a strong traction are needed for hiking.
- Lightweight daypack
- Sufficient drinking water
- Small snacks/energy food.
- Wear a light jacket or warm clothing.
- Rain jacket during rainy days.
- A hat/cap and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Personal medicines and basic first aid supplies
- Phone or camera
- Small umbrella (when necessary due to weather)
Clothing should be appropriate for changing weather conditions. The forest can be warm to climb in and the hilltop can be cooler in winter. Chandragiri Hills also recommends that visitors pack a jacket that is warm and waterproof in case of rain.
Chandragiri Hill Viewpoints and Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple
As you get to the top of the mountain, you gain more than a mountain view. The Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple is also located close to the hilltop in Chandragiri Hill, which is an important Hindu religious site. After the climb, visitors have time to visit the temple.
Local religious tradition also makes the place significant. Stories are linked to the forehead of a woman named Sati Devi. Historical reports have also tied Chandragiri to King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who is believed to have seen the Kathmandu Valley from here.
There are also viewing areas along the top of the hill. The views from these are possible on clear days, extending out across the Kathmandu Valley and towards the mountains. A tourist can enjoy the natural beauty, the culture at the peak and the leisure time before they start down.
Safety and Practical Hiking Tips
Close to Kathmandu, the Chandragiri Day Hike still entails a lengthy climb uphill through forest environments. It is a much more comfortable experience when you are well prepared.
- Use shoes that have a good grip in wet weather.
- Take sufficient water for the climbs.
- Avoid running up or down stairs but walk at a steady pace.
- Take mini breaks as necessary.
- Take care around roots, stones and rough bits.
- Bring rain cover in rainy weather.
- Keep your phone with you in case you need to call back your group.
- Keep to the forest path, with your guide or group.
- If you are going down the mountain on a cable car, inspect the condition.
- If you are unwell, let your guide or Adventure Walkway group know.
If the walk down is too arduous, the cable car can be a good alternative. It also mentions emergency support and emergency power arrangements in its official operating information.
Who Is the Chandragiri Day Hike Suitable For?
The Chandragiri Day Hike is ideal for those who want to go hiking for a whole day without being far from Kathmandu Valley. It can be suitable for visitors who are not too familiar with trekking, since the hike is only one day long and you do not need to camp overnight or go for long-duration hikes.
Hikers must be able to do several hours of uphill walking, however. The route is easier for beginners, who can hike it at a slow pace, making frequent stops. It is not challenging for those who are experienced and can handle it at a moderate pace.
For families and older people, it would be better to walk up to the mountain and then take the cable car back down at the end of the day, since the hike is less demanding. The cable car also allows visitors to reach the top of the hill without having to walk their way up.
In general, the hike is ideal for those who wish to explore the forest, enjoy the scenic mountains and access a cultural site up on a hill within a day’s tour from Kathmandu.
