Introduction of Jamacho Day Hike
Jamacho Day Hike is a one day hike from Kathmandu which takes you into the forested hills of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park without an overnight stay. The trail is inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, and the hike begins from the Fulbari Gate area near Balaju. From Kathmandu, the drive to the starting point is short, so most of the day can be spent walking rather than sitting in a vehicle.
The hike climbs through the forest towards Jamacho Hill, where Jamacho Gumba and a Buddhist stupa stand near the top. The walking route has a steady uphill section with stone steps and forest paths. It is not a technical trail, but you need to be comfortable walking uphill for several hours. The return journey uses the same general route and is easier in terms of breathing, although the steps can be tiring on the knees.
Jamacho is generally described at around 2,100 to 2,130 meters above sea level. Different sources give slightly different summit figures, so we use approximately 2,128 meters for the main Jamacho area rather than presenting a very exact figure as if all sources agree. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation also lists the Fulbari Gate to Jamacho route as an established trail inside the park.
Adventure Walk Way arranges this trip for travellers who want a straightforward hiking day from Kathmandu. We take care of the transportation, guide and park entry arrangements, so you can concentrate on the walk. Our guide will stay with you throughout the hike and adjust the pace according to the group.
The forest is an important part of the Jamacho Day Hike. Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is close to Kathmandu but has a wide range of plants, birds and wildlife. The Nepal Tourism Board records 177 species of birds, 19 species of mammals and 102 species of butterflies in the park. You may hear birds or see monkeys during the walk, but wildlife sightings depend on the day and should never be expected as part of the itinerary.
At Jamacho hike, there is time to visit the stupa and monastery area, have lunch and take a rest before heading down. This hike is also useful for people preparing for a longer trek. The continuous climb gives you a chance to test your walking pace and see how your legs manage several hours of uphill and downhill movement. Previous trekking experience is not necessary, but some regular walking before the trip is helpful.
For visitors staying in Kathmandu, Jamacho is also a practical choice when there is not enough time for an overnight trek. You can leave the city in the morning, spend several hours in the forest and return to your hotel later the same day.

In the morning we will pick you at your hotel, Kathmandu. From there, we will drive towards Fulbari Gate, the usual starting point for the Jamacho trail. The actual driving time will be based on your hotel location and the traffic.
Starting the Hike:
Once the formalities of entry into the park are over, we will start walking in the forest. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you move towards Jamacho Hill. Our guide will maintain a comfortable pace and take short breaks as necessary.
Forest Walk and Jamacho Gumba:
The principal activity of the Jamacho Day Hike program is the uphill hike in the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The route has stone steps and forest areas. Once on top, you may pay your visit to Jamacho Gumba and the close stupa. In case of clear weather, one can also take time to look over Kathmandu Valley and the hills.
Lunch and Rest:
After reaching the top, we will have a packed lunch and take time to rest. You can relax after the climb, take photographs and spend some time around the Jamacho Gumba and stupa before starting the descent.
Return to Fulbari Gate:

Trip Information
Jamacho Day Hike Cost
The price of the Jamacho Day Hike changes according to the number of people travelling together. The larger group can share the cost of the private vehicle and guide, and this lowers the price per person.
These are the estimated planning rates. We will confirm the exact price before your booking is finalized.
| Group Size | Transportation | Guide | Park Entry | Lunch | Estimated Cost |
| 1 person | Private | Private guide | Included | Included | US$ 70 |
| 2 people | Private | Private guide | Included | Included | US$ 50 per person |
| 3 to 5 people | Private | Private guide | Included | Included | US$ 40 per person |
| 6 or more | Private | Local hiking guide | Included | Included | US$ 35 per person |
Park entry fees vary according to nationality and may change from time to time. We will confirm the applicable charges when your trip is booked. Transportation costs may also vary if the pickup location is outside our regular Kathmandu service area or if you request additional transportation.
If you have a different transportation requirement, a larger private group or a special meal request, let us know before booking. We can explain the additional cost clearly rather than adding unexpected charges later.
Hike Difficulty and Trail Experience
Jamacho Day Hike itinerary is suitable for people who are reasonably active and comfortable with several hours of uphill walking. We describe the trail as easy to moderate rather than calling it a simple walk because the climb continues for a good part of the route.
The main effort comes from the stairs and the steady rise in elevation. There are sections where the trail feels gentle, followed by stretches where the steps become more noticeable. Beginners can complete the hike, but they should not underestimate the climb just because Jamacho is close to Kathmandu.
A person who regularly walks, uses stairs or takes short hikes should have a good starting point. If you spend most of your time sitting and do not normally exercise, some preparation before the trip will make the day more comfortable.
The downhill section is not as demanding on your breathing, but it can put more pressure on your knees. Walking slowly and placing your feet carefully on the steps is better than trying to descend quickly.
There is no need for climbing equipment or special technical skills. Good shoes, enough water and a reasonable walking pace are the main things you need.
Our guide will not expect everyone in the group to walk at the same speed. We can stop when someone needs a rest and allow the group to enjoy the forest along the way.
Best Time for Jamacho Day Hike
We can do Jamacho hike all four seasons, although the trail feels different depending on the weather. Spring and autumn are generally comfortable periods for hiking, while winter mornings can be cold but often provide clear conditions. The rainy months require more care because wet steps can make the climb and descent slippery.
The Nepal Tourism Board lists September to May as the better period for visiting Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and identifies June to August as the rainy period.
| Season | Months | Trail Conditions | Weather and Views | Our Recommendation |
| Spring | March to May | Generally dry and comfortable | Mild weather with good chances of clear views | Very good |
| Summer and Monsoon | June to August | Wet sections and slippery steps are possible | Rain and clouds can reduce visibility | Possible with care |
| Autumn | September to November | Usually dry and comfortable | Pleasant temperatures and clearer skies | Best period |
| Winter | December to February | Mostly dry | Cold mornings, with clear days possible | Good |
There is no need to cancel a trip simply because it is winter. A warm layer for the morning is usually enough, and the temperature becomes more comfortable as the day progresses.
During the monsoon, we pay closer attention to the forecast. If there is heavy rain expected, we can discuss changing the hiking date if your schedule allows. Wet weather does not make the trip impossible, but it does change the trail conditions.
Transportation and Access
The Jamacho Day Hike itinerary is convenient for travellers staying in Kathmandu. The usual starting point is Fulbari Gate, near the Balaju area. From central Kathmandu, the drive is relatively short, although the actual time depends on traffic and your hotel location.
Adventure Walk Way provides private transportation for the planned trip. We will collect you from your hotel and take you to the trailhead. After the hike, the vehicle will be waiting for the return journey.
The short drive is useful because it allows more time for walking. You do not need to spend several hours travelling to another district before the hike even begins.
Fulbari Gate is also an established access point for the Jamacho route. The current management plan for Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park specifically lists the Fulbari Gate to Jamacho trail among the park’s routes.
If your hotel is outside the usual Kathmandu pickup area, please tell us in advance. We can check whether the location can be included and whether an additional transportation charge applies.
Trail Conditions
The Jamacho hike trail is mostly a forest route with stone steps and established walking sections. The climb begins from the Fulbari Gate area and continues upward through the Nagarjun forest. Much of the trail is shaded, which can make the walk more comfortable during warmer weather.
The surface is not exactly the same throughout the hike. Some sections have regular stone steps, while other parts feel more like a natural forest path. This is why comfortable footwear matters.
During dry weather, the route is generally straightforward to follow. After rain, however, stones can become slippery and muddy sections may appear. The descent needs particular care because wet steps can be difficult to judge.
There are also places where you can stop for a short rest. We encourage hikers to use these opportunities instead of pushing themselves until they are completely tired.
The exact distance reported by different sources varies because some measurements start from different points or use different routes. For this reason, we prefer to focus on the actual walking experience rather than advertise an exact distance that may not match your route.
What You See During the Hike
The forest is the first thing you notice once the hike gets properly underway. Kathmandu quickly feels further away as the road noise becomes less noticeable and the trail enters the trees.
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is home to a wide range of birds, mammals, butterflies and plant species. The Nepal Tourism Board records 177 bird species and 19 mammal species in the park. Rhesus monkeys and langur monkeys are among the animals found in the wider park area.
You may hear birds before seeing them. If the trail is quiet, you can also notice smaller details such as different tree species, insects and changing vegetation. We encourage guests not to rush through these sections because the forest is a large part of what makes the walk different from a normal city outing.
Near the top, the surroundings become more open. Jamacho Gumba and the Buddhist stupa are the main points of interest. Prayer flags around the area add to the religious setting.
The hilltop is also used by local visitors and people coming for religious purposes. We ask our guests to keep their voices low around the monastery and to treat the religious structures with respect.
Views from the top depend on the weather. On a clear day, Kathmandu Valley can be seen below, and distant Himalayan ranges may appear to the north. Haze is common around Kathmandu, especially during some seasons, so we never promise a particular mountain view.
Food and Drinking Water
Lunch is included in the estimated package price shown above. We normally arrange a simple meal that is practical to carry and eat during the day. If you have dietary requirements, tell us before the trip so we can discuss the available options.
Water is particularly important because the route climbs steadily. We recommend carrying your own reusable bottle and drinking regularly instead of waiting until you feel very thirsty.
You may also want to carry a small snack. Nuts, fruit, biscuits or an energy bar can be useful during the climb, especially if you normally eat small meals throughout the day.
There is no reason to carry a large amount of food. The hike is completed within a day, and your bag should remain light.
Please avoid leaving food wrappers or bottles along the trail. Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is a protected area, and keeping the forest clean is everyone’s responsibility.
What to Bring for Jamacho Day Hike
- Comfortable walking or hiking shoes with a good grip
- A small daypack
- Around 1.5 to 2 litres of drinking water
- A reusable water bottle
- Light snacks
- A light jacket or warm layer
- A rain jacket during the rainy season
- Sun hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Personal medication if required
- Phone or camera
- Small personal first aid items
- Some Nepali rupees for personal expenses
You do not need a large trekking backpack. There is no overnight stay, so bringing only what you need for several hours of walking is the better option.
Your clothing should also match the season. Light clothes work well during warmer months, while a fleece or jacket is useful during winter mornings. If rain is possible, keeping a rain jacket in your daypack is better than relying on the forecast alone.
Mobile Network and Connectivity
Mobile connectivity can vary along the Jamacho Day Hike itinerary. Because the trail passes through forest, you should not expect the same level of signal that you have in central Kathmandu.
Some sections may have usable mobile coverage, while other parts can be weaker. It is better to tell family or friends about your hiking plans before leaving the city rather than depending on a continuous signal throughout the route.
Your phone is still useful for photographs, maps and emergency communication where a signal is available. Keep it charged before leaving your hotel.
If you use your phone for navigation, carrying a power bank is a sensible choice. You should also avoid playing music loudly through speakers because other hikers and visitors may be enjoying the quiet forest.
Jamacho Day Hike Safety
The Jamacho hike route is close to Kathmandu, but it still passes through a protected forest area, so normal hiking care is important.
Our guide will explain the day’s plan before you start. If you feel tired, dizzy, unwell or uncomfortable at any point, let the guide know. There is no benefit in hiding discomfort just to keep up with another person.
The stone steps deserve attention, particularly after rain. Good shoes reduce the chance of slipping, but they do not remove the need to walk carefully.
Always carry your stuff with you and never leave any bags or even foods unattended. In case of wildlife sightings, maintain a moderate distance and avoid feeding or touching wildlife.
The park has visitor regulations and hikers are expected to adhere to the specified trail and directions given by the park personnel. The region is conserved to preserve the natural environment and wildlife, thus, carrying rubbish with you is one of the key aspects of responsible hiking.
Weather can also change the difficulty of the route. On a hot day, take more water breaks. If rain begins, slow down on the steps. If conditions become unsuitable, our team will discuss the safest option with you.
Fitness and Preparation
You do not need to spend months preparing for Jamacho Day Hike. A little regular walking before the trip is enough for many people.
If you have a few weeks before your visit, try walking for 45 minutes to an hour several times a week. Include some uphill sections or stairs when possible. This will help your legs become familiar with the type of movement you will use during the hike.
It is also useful to avoid starting the day already tired. Get enough sleep the night before and have a normal breakfast before leaving your hotel.
Do not begin the climb too quickly. A pace that feels almost too slow at the beginning often works better later in the hike. The route is not a competition, and there is plenty of time to reach the top.
If you have not hiked before, tell us when making the booking. Our guide can plan the day around your pace and allow additional breaks when needed.
Why Choose Adventure Walk Way for Jamacho Day Hike?
Adventure Walk Way arranges the Jamacho Day Hike as a practical day trip rather than simply providing a route and sending you on your way.
We understand that visitors may have different levels of hiking experience. Some guests may already be comfortable on mountain trails, while others may be taking their first hike in Nepal. Our guide will take this into account and keep the pace suitable for the group.
Transportation is also kept simple. We collect you from your Kathmandu hotel, take you to the trailhead and bring you back after the hike. You do not have to work out local transportation before breakfast or find your way back after several hours on the trail.
We also explain the cost and included services before the trip. This means you know what has been arranged and what you need to pay for yourself.
Most importantly, we do not believe that a good hiking day needs to be rushed. There is time to stop, drink water, take photographs, look around the forest and spend a little time at Jamacho Gumba.
If you have a particular schedule in Kathmandu, we can discuss the starting time and make the arrangements around your plans where possible.

Jamacho is generally described at around 2,100 to 2,130 meters above sea level. Many current hiking sources use approximately 2,128 meters, while other sources give slightly different figures.
The walking portion usually takes several hours, with the climb commonly taking around two to three and a half hours and the return taking less time for many hikers. Including transportation, lunch and rest stops, you should plan for most of the day.
Yes, as long as you are comfortable walking uphill for a few hours. Previous trekking experience and technical climbing skills are not required. Regular walking and some stair training before the hike can make the climb more comfortable.
The trail is mostly easy to moderate. The main physical challenge is the continuous uphill climb and the stone steps. It may also be exhausting to the knees in the downhill part, particularly when you are not accustomed to extended walks.
Yes. The trail is inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, so visitors need to pay the applicable park entry fee. Adventure Walk Way includes the park entry arrangement in the package. Fees are currently based on nationality and are subject to change and when booking the trip we ensure that the charges are in place.
You can, but you should be prepared for wet conditions. Stone steps can get slippery and clouds can obscure the views. We recommend checking the weather before the trip and changing the date when heavy rain is expected and your schedule allows.
September to May is generally the more suitable period according to Nepal Tourism Board information for Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Spring and autumn are particularly comfortable for many hikers.
Children who are comfortable walking uphill for several hours can join. The decision depends on their age, fitness and previous walking experience. Families should expect a slower pace and more breaks.
Lunch is included in our package. We arrange a practical meal that can be carried to the hilltop. If you have a particular dietary requirement, please tell us before departure.
Yes. We recommend carrying around 1.5 to 2 litres of water for the day. You can also bring a reusable bottle and refill it where a safe and suitable source is available.
Mountain views are possible on clear days. The hilltop provides views across Kathmandu Valley and towards the northern mountain ranges. Cloud, haze and rain can block the mountains, so views depend on the weather.
The park has many species of birds, mammals and butterflies, so you may notice wildlife during the walk. Animals that the visitors can come across are monkeys and birds. Encountering any animals is uncommon and tourists must never touch or feed wild creatures.
Mobile coverage can vary along the forest route. In certain locations, it may have a signal and in other locations, it may have a weaker signal. Before leaving Kathmandu, we suggest that you inform your family or friends of your hiking plans.
A guide is recommended for visitors who are unfamiliar with the route and park rules. Adventure Walk Way provides a local guide who stays with the group and helps with the walking pace, route and practical arrangements.
Yes. We normally arrange private transportation and a guide for your group. This allows you to travel with your own companions rather than joining a large group.
We will check the weather before departure. If the conditions are manageable, the hike can continue with extra care. If heavy rain or other conditions make the route unsuitable, we will go over the options available with you.
Yes. The steady uphill and downhill walking can be useful preparation for a longer trek. It gives you a chance to practise pacing, walking with a daypack and managing several hours of movement.
However, Jamacho should not be treated as complete preparation for a high altitude trek. Longer treks require additional preparation for distance, altitude and multiple days of walking.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Good walking shoes are more important than special trekking clothing. In winter, carry a warm layer, while a rain jacket is useful during the rainy months.
Send us your preferred date, number of people and hotel location in Kathmandu. We will enquire about availability and give the up-to-date price and arrangements of your group.
After all the confirmation is done, we will tell you the pickup time and other details you require before we begin the hike.
